What the Funk?! An All BIPOC Burlesque Festival at the Triple Door!

What the Funk?! An All BIPOC Burlesque Festival sizzles at the Triple Door in August

What the Funk?!, the Northwest’s only all BIPOC burlesque festival graces the stage of the Triple Door August 19th-21st.

Opening night kicks off with emcee and special guest Foxy Tann with a guest appearance by RedBone and Pacific Northwest featured performers Ava D'Jor and Willy Nilly. Night two is our showcase with emcee Jeez Loueez, the number one burlesque personality in the world via 21st Century Burlesque. This evening will also showcase headliner performances by GiGi Holliday and Samson Night and Pacific Northwest featured performers Lola Coquette and Monday Blues.

Night three is Grand Master Funk Competition with emcee RebeccaMm Davis and headliners Ms. Briq House and Moscato Extatique and a special performance by Foxy Tann and the Wham Bam Thank You Ma’ams! The title of Grand Master Funk is a large honor and the winner encompasses and represents all that What the Funk?! Festival stands for. They will receive a crown and sash along with a cash prize, reaffirming the goals of WTFF: representation and compensation.

“It is a very "For Us, By Us"  approach, and it is the best way for us to make sure that the narrative isn't hijacked,” co-producer, Mx. Pucks A’Plenty shares. “What the Funk?! is about representation and reclamation… Many arts organizations, festivals, theater groups, etc... still have little to no BIPOC representation on their boards, decision making committees, and on their stages.” Representation matters, and that is why it is so noteworthy that this festival managed to land the Triple Door, one of the most prestigious stages in Seattle. Pucks goes on to explain, “Getting the opportunity to produce this show at the Triple Door is beyond my wildest dreams. This kind of event on their stage is historic and it feels good to be a part of history.”

What the Funk?! Festival pays tribute to the Black American music genre of Funk while showcasing and honoring the artistry of Black, Indigenous and performers of color through the often overlooked performance art medium of Burlesque. WTFF celebrates performers locally, nationally, and internationally through their three day festival. They hope to inspire, offer representation, and shine a spotlight on the creativity and talent found in the BIPOC Burlesque community.
